Why Copenhagen Is Perfect for Solo Travel

As a woman who frequently travels solo, I was especially impressed when I went to Copenhagen a couple of months ago. I’m generally comfortable traveling alone (as long as I do my research first), but I’m also used to solo travel having certain moments that may feel lonely or uncomfortable. BUT, I didn’t have any of those moments in Copenhagen! I found the city to be an incredibly fun and relaxing place to travel solo. Here are some of the reasons why Copenhagen should be your next solo trip:

The best things to do are conducive to being solo

There are certain places that I enjoy traveling with friends or with my partner, but don't enjoy as much when I'm traveling solo because most of the activities are ones I prefer to do with other people (such as bar-hopping). Copenhagen is just the opposite. All of the best things I did in Copenhagen were things I felt perfectly comfortable and happy doing on my own. The Louisiana Museum of Art is just outside the city and it’s one of the most impressive museums I’ve ever seen. I had so much fun exploring it and don’t think the experience would have been any better with another person. There were more good museums inside the city, a lot of food halls, and interesting historical sites - all activities that I think are perfect for solo travel.

Great public transportation

An intuitive, safe, and efficient public transportation system always makes solo travel that much easier. It’s not like you can split cab fare with your friends if you’re traveling by yourself, so public transportation is important if you’re on a budget. Using public transportation in Copenhagen was really convenient and a total breeze. The subway system and the buses run very reliably so I never had to wait for more than a few minutes for a train. The subway system itself is really easy to figure out so your chances of getting lost are low. It’s also super clean, which is a nice bonus if you’re used to NYC subway stations!

Not much of a language barrier

Despite being in a foreign country, I never encountered a language barrier in Copenhagen. Sometimes people in restaurants or shops would speak to me in Danish, but when they realized I didn’t speak the language, they kindly switched to English without skipping a beat. I have no qualms about traveling to places with significant language barriers to navigate, but it is nice that you don’t have to worry about this in Copenhagen.

Safety

I felt completely safe the entire time I was in Copenhagen. As a woman traveling alone, I never encountered any cat-calling or unwanted stares or attention. I felt safe walking around the city alone, even after dark, and also felt perfectly safe using public transportation by myself. I found people in Copenhagen to be generally helpful and friendly, without being intrusive or overly friendly in a way that can feel uncomfortable as a woman.
